The prompt for the image was the theme “Hard Love”. I wanted to make an emotionally frustrating image to elicit the feelings that go along with any relationship at one time or another. I settled on the memory of the determination as a young girl just learning about puzzles and finding two pieces that don’t quite fit. I remember still trying to cram it together to make it fit. Sometimes I got them to fit somewhat but bent the edges in the process. It struck me how this struggle parallels how we so desperately try to make fantasy fit real life. There is this pervasive idea that there is someone out there who is your perfect fit - as if you had been stamped out of the same cardboard in a puzzle factory, then disconnected, shuffled about in the box and all you have to do is find each other again. Those of us raised in a world of romantic movies, books and even unobtainable ideals put forth by those who raised us come to expect that perfect fit from our partners. The truth is uncomfortable when we find out that no one in the entire world fits us perfectly. I sympathize with these puzzle piece characters because who knows if they are going to keep on working for their love of if they will decide that it is better to move on. It seems as if everything is against them but this is the torment of many relationships - to decide whether the struggles are worth it… Oh and I was also thinking of the screaming eels from Princess Bride.
